Description

The second leg of this heavyweight European clash arrived at the Groupama Stadium with Olympique Lyonnais facing a rare deficit. The primary challenge for the eight-time champions was overturning a 1-0 loss from the first leg at the Volkswagen Arena. For VfL Wolfsburg, the objective was to maintain their defensive shape and replicate their clinical performance from Germany to eliminate the tournament favorites.

The match was a battle of endurance and tactical flexibility. The objective for Lyon was to apply relentless pressure through Lily Yohannes and Selma Bacha, while the goal for Wolfsburg was to catch the French side on the break through Jule Brand. With both teams missing key personnel due to late-season injuries, the tactical focus for Lyon was to utilize their superior bench depth to overwhelm the German defense in the latter stages of the game.

Result Description

Olympique Lyonnais showcased their championship pedigree by defeating VfL Wolfsburg 4-0 (4-1 on aggregate) after a dramatic extra-time period. Lyon leveled the tie in the 16th minute when the 18-year-old sensation Lily Yohannes found the back of the net with a deflected strike. Despite dominant possession and 37 total shots from the hosts, Wolfsburg's Stina Johannes produced a heroic performance in goal to force the match into extra time.

The deadlock finally broke in the 102nd minute when substitute Melchie Dumornay bundled the ball home following a corner. Lyon then opened the floodgates; Damaris Egurrola steered a Bacha set-piece into the corner just minutes later to make it 3-0. The rout was completed in the 119th minute by Tabitha Chawinga, who rounded the keeper to seal Lyon's place in the semi-finals. The victory sets up a highly anticipated clash against Arsenal WFC, while Wolfsburg’s exit marks their earliest departure from the competition in three years.
