Description

The opening Coppa Shell race of the 2026 Ferrari Challenge North America season at The Thermal Club brings together a diverse field of Pro-Am and Amateur drivers for a 30-minute dash in the desert. The strategic narrative centers on Yahn Bernier, who starts from pole position and looks to establish an early-season points advantage following his strong form in late 2025. The primary hurdle for the field is the high thermal degradation on the 8.2km Twin Palms circuit; drivers must balance aggressive early-lap moves with the "mechanical necessity" of preserving their tires for the final 10 minutes. Tactically, track position is paramount at Thermal, as the technical second sector offers few clean overtaking opportunities compared to the heavy braking zones at the ends of the long straights.

The headline story focuses on the debut of several regional favorites, including Steve Check and Glen Moss, who are competing on what is effectively their home turf. Strategically, the focus is also on the Coppa Shell AM class, where a crowded midfield often leads to intense multi-car battles that can disrupt the rhythm of the overall leaders. With the California sun beating down on the Coachella Valley, the ability to manage cockpit heat and brake fade will be the defining factors in who reaches the podium in this historic season opener.
