Description

The world’s leading marathon runners return to Chicago for the 48th Bank of America Chicago Marathon, with defending champion Jacob Kiplimo headlining one of the deepest men’s fields in the race’s history. Kiplimo arrives after running 2:00:28 in London earlier this year and will attempt to defend his Chicago crown against a formidable group that includes Amos Kipruto, Milkesa Mengesha, Tadese Takele and Daniel Mateiko. Chicago’s famously flat and fast course has repeatedly produced historic performances and world records, placing both victory and exceptionally quick times within reach if conditions cooperate. With a major marathon title, significant prize money and one of road running’s most prestigious victories at stake, the men’s race should provide another high-level battle through the streets of Chicago before the decisive finish in Grant Park.

Result Description

Amos Kipruto completed a remarkable three-year progression in Chicago by winning the 2026 men’s race after finishing third in 2024 and second in 2025. The Kenyan took control during the second half of the marathon and gradually broke away from the leading group, crossing the line in approximately 2:01:09 for the second major-marathon victory of his career after London in 2022. Tadese Takele finished second in 2:02:56, while defending champion Jacob Kiplimo faded to fourth in 2:04:18 after entering as the pre-race favourite. Kipruto’s victory denied Kiplimo the chance to become the first man since Samuel Wanjiru in 2009 and 2010 to win consecutive Chicago Marathon titles.
